User subscriptions for CrashPlan

This article describes the standard user-based licensing model for CrashPlan environments (such as the Endpoint and Enterprise plans). User subscriptions apply to backup, restore, maintenance, and user support.

 Device-based licensing plans
If your subscription bills by device, please refer to How device-based licensing works.

Consuming a user subscription

Users are licensed according to monthly or annual subscriptions. All users associated with one or more archives require an active user subscription.

  • A user is associated with backup archives that contain data from the user's devices.
  • If the CrashPlan app is installed per user on a device, each per-user installation on that device requires a separate user subscription.

 Device limits
The number of devices allowed per user depends on your specific subscription plan. Please refer to the Pricing and Licensing table in our CrashPlan Products and Subscription Plans article for your plan's limits.

The following scenarios provide examples of users who consume a user subscription and those who do not:

Consumes a user subscription Does not consume a user subscription
  • Active user with one or more active devices.
  • User (active or deactivated) associated with an archive in cold storage.
  • Deactivated user whose archives have expired.
  • Deactivated user whose archive has been permanently purged.
  • Active user without any active devices or archives in cold storage.

Subscription terms and management

  • Support and Maintenance: Full support and maintenance are included in all active monthly and annual user subscriptions. As long as you have active users, you can upgrade your CrashPlan environment and receive support.

  • Term Start Dates: User subscriptions begin their term on the date of purchase.

  • Purchasing and Upgrades: Depending on your plan, additional licenses can be purchased online via your admin console or by contacting your Account Executive.

User license expiration

When a user becomes unlicensed due to license expiration or quantity reduction:

  • That user's data is no longer backed up.

  • That user can still log into the CrashPlan app, but cannot restore any files.

  • Administrators can still log into the CrashPlan console to perform administrative tasks (such as managing users or devices), but cannot restore files for that user from the console.

If your organization's subscription expires (or is otherwise terminated):

  • No user data is backed up.
  • No user data can be restored.
  • No new users can be added.
  • CrashPlan deactivates the organization's account.
  • CrashPlan retains customer data in the cloud according to our data retention policy.

The availability of features in the CrashPlan console may depend on your product plan, and in some cases licensing for these features may be separate from your user subscriptions. If your license for these features expire, they are no longer available in the CrashPlan console.
