Pause backups and downloads

Overview

This article describes how to pause file backups and downloads. 

Considerations

• When pausing the CrashPlan service from the command line, you can specify a time period after which the CrashPlan service automatically resumes.
• An administrator can prevent pausing with the Pausing Controls setting. If pausing is disallowed, backups cannot be paused, and none of the backup pause options described below appear in the CrashPlan app.

Pause the CrashPlan service

From the CrashPlan app

You can pause the CrashPlan service.

With Pause Backups

1. Sign in to the CrashPlan app.
2. Click Pause Backups.
   The CrashPlan service is paused for 1 hour.

From the CrashPlan app menu

1. Sign in to the CrashPlan app.
2. From the CrashPlan app menu:
   • Windows: Select Tools > Pause CrashPlan
   • Mac: Select File > Pause CrashPlan
   • Linux: Select Tools > Pause CrashPlan

The CrashPlan service is paused for 1 hour.

From the notification area or menu bar icon

You can use the CrashPlan app icon in the notification area (Windows) or the menu bar (Mac) to pause the CrashPlan service for a specific period of time.

1. Open the notification area item (Windows) or the menu bar item (Mac):
   • Windows: In the lower right of the screen, select the CrashPlan app icon.
   • Mac: In the top right of the screen, select the CrashPlan app icon.
2. Select the gear menu.
3. Choose Pause.
4. Select a duration (1 hour, 4 hours, or 1 day).
   The CrashPlan service is paused.

With CrashPlan commands

You can also enter a manual command to pause the CrashPlan service for a specific period of time:

1. Sign in to the CrashPlan app.

2. Open CrashPlan Commands using one of the following methods: 

   • Double-click the CrashPlan logo in the upper-left corner.
   • Enter the keyboard shortcut for your operating system:
     • Windows: Ctrl+Shift+C
     • Mac: Option+Command+C
     • Linux: Ctrl+Shift+C
3. Run a command to pause the CrashPlan service:
   • To pause the CrashPlan service for 1 hour, run the pause command.
   • To specify the number of minutes that the CrashPlan service pauses, enter a numeric value after pause. For example, entering pause 30 pauses the CrashPlan service for 30 minutes. You can enter a value up to a maximum of 1440 minutes (24 hours). 
4. Press Enter.

Pause a single destination

Step 1: Determine the GUID of the destination

To pause a particular destination, you must know the GUID of the destination you want to pause. To determine the GUID:

1. On your device, navigate to your log folder:
   • Windows: C:\ProgramData\CrashPlan\log
     To view this hidden folder, open a file browser and paste the path in the address bar. If you installed per user, see the file and folder hierarchy.
   • Mac: /Library/Logs/CrashPlan
     If you installed per user, see the file and folder hierarchy.
   • Linux: /usr/local/crashplan/log
2. Open the app.log in a text editor.
3. Locate the Destinations section.
4. Copy the GUID of the destination. The destination GUID is the first number that appears in each destination record (for example 43 or 1111111111111111111). The name of the destination appears after the GUID.

Step 2: Pause the destination

Once you know the GUID of the destination that you would like to pause, follow the instructions below to pause backup and restores for that destination.

1. Sign in to the CrashPlan app.
2. Open CrashPlan commands using one of the following methods: 
   • Double-click the CrashPlan logo in the upper-left corner.
   • Enter the keyboard shortcut for your operating system:
     • Windows: Ctrl+Shift+C
     • Mac: Option+Command+C
     • Linux: Ctrl+Shift+C
3. Enter this command, replacing GUID and time information:
   pause.destination <destination GUID> <time in minutes> 
   
   Do not include the < or > symbols. The time is the number of minutes that the CrashPlan service pauses.
4. Press Enter.

Resume the CrashPlan service

From the CrashPlan app

To resume the CrashPlan service after you've paused it:

1. Sign in to the CrashPlan app.
2. From the Tools (Windows and Linux) or File (Mac) menu, select Resume CrashPlan.

From the notification area and menu bar app

1. Open the notification area item (Windows) or the menu bar item (Mac):
   • Windows: In the lower right of the screen, select the CrashPlan app icon.
   • Mac: In the top right of the screen, select the CrashPlan app icon.
2. Select Resume.
   The CrashPlan service resumes.

With CrashPlan commands

To resume the CrashPlan service after you've paused it:

1. Sign in to the CrashPlan app.
2. Open CrashPlan Commands using one of the following methods: 
   • Double-click the CrashPlan logo in the upper-left corner.
   • Enter the keyboard shortcut for your operating system:
     • Windows: Ctrl+Shift+C
     • Mac: Option+Command+C
     • Linux: Ctrl+Shift+C
3. Enter this command: resume
4. Press Enter.

Pause a download

If you have initiated a download with the CrashPlan app, you can pause the download using the following steps:

1. Sign in to the CrashPlan app.
2. Choose Downloads in the upper-right corner.
3. Click Pause.
   The download is paused.

Resume a download

To resume the download after you've paused it:

1. Sign in to the CrashPlan app.
2. Choose Downloads in the upper-right corner.
3. Click Resume.
   The download is resumed.

Stop a download

To stop a download in progress:

1. Sign in to the CrashPlan app.
2. Choose Downloads in the upper-right corner.
3. On the Downloads pane, scroll to the right.
4. Hover over the download you wish to stop and click "x" to clear the job.
   The download is stopped.
