Changing your backup file selection

Objective

This article describes how to add or remove files, folders, or drives from your CrashPlan backup file selection.

Prerequisites

  • Permissions: You must have permission to change your backup file selection. Depending on your organization's configuration, your administrator may prevent you from editing the file selection.

Note for administrators
To allow end-users to change their file selection, an administrator must first unlock the setting and push it to devices from the CrashPlan console.

Procedure

Follow the steps below 

Deselecting files deletes them from your backup
Deselecting locations or files is a destructive action. If you remove a file, folder, or drive from your file selection, it will be permanently deleted from your backup archive during the next archive maintenance run and cannot be restored.

CrashPlan app

Use this method if you have direct access to the device.

  1. Open the CrashPlan app.
  2. Click Manage Files.
  3. Navigate through the file tree and select or deselect the check boxes next to the items you want to add or remove from your backup.
    Note on folder icons: A line inside a check box indicates partial selection (meaning the folder itself is not selected for backup, but specific files or subfolders inside it are).
  4. Click Save.
  5. If you removed any files, a "Delete Files from Backup" warning will appear. Check the I understand box to confirm, then click Delete.
    The CrashPlan app will synchronize your new file selection with your backup destination.

CrashPlan console

Use this method to adjust the file selection for a device remotely.

  1. Sign in to the CrashPlan console.
  2. Navigate to Administration > Devices.
  3. Click the name of the device you would like to modify.
    You are navigated to its Device Details page.
  4. Click the Action menu gear icon and select Edit.
  5. Select the Backup or Backup Sets tab, and locate File Selection.
  6. Modify the file selection using one of the following methods:
    • Type an exact file path into the Included files or Excluded files fields and click the + (plus) button.
    • If the device is currently online, click Select Files to browse the device's file system and toggle the check boxes to add or remove items.
  7. Click Save.
