How device-based licensing works

Overview

This article explains how billing and licensing are calculated for CrashPlan subscriptions that use a device-based pricing model.

Billing per computer

With device-based CrashPlan subscriptions, you pay for the number of computers that appear as Active Devices in the CrashPlan console, whether or not they have backed up any data.

If you no longer want to be charged for a device, you must deactivate it in the CrashPlan console. Organizations using cold storage settings for deactivated archives must also purge the archive from cold storage.

Minimum subscription charge and cancellation
Device-based subscriptions bill for, at minimum, a single device license. If you remove all devices on your account without canceling your subscription, you will still be billed for a single license until your subscription is canceled.

Monthly subscriptions

For monthly subscriptions, your payment method is automatically charged at the beginning of each billing cycle for each active device in your organization. The number of Active Devices is tallied 48 hours prior to your billing date.

Yearly subscriptions

With a yearly subscription, you pay up front for a one- or two-year term, establishing a baseline number for how many Active Devices you can have at a given time over the course of your term. A monthly check compares your license allocation with the number of Active Devices and bills dynamically based on changes:

  • Adding devices: If you add devices to your account that exceed your yearly allocation, you will be charged a prorated amount to add additional licenses for the remainder of your subscription term equal to the difference.
  • Removing devices: If you deactivate devices so that you are under your yearly allocation, those open licenses will remain available to use for the rest of the year if you need to add more devices later. However, removed devices will not be prorated or refunded.
  • Renewals: Your baseline license amount for the next one- or two-year term is tallied 48 hours prior to your billing date based on the current number of Active Devices on your account. To maximize your savings, keep any devices you plan to use active over the course of the term.
