Restoring files from a local backup during device replacement

Objective

This article walks you through the steps required to transfer files from a local backup destination, such as an external drive, to a new device using the replace device wizard. This is particularly useful for larger backups, since files can transfer much faster from a local destination than they do from a cloud destination.

Prerequisites

  • You must be using the replace device wizard within the CrashPlan app.
  • You can only connect a local backup if it corresponds to the device that you are replacing.
  • The device ID (GUID) of the device you are replacing must match the device ID associated with your local backup.

Locating your GUID
You can locate your device's ID in the CrashPlan console's Device details.

Procedure

  1. Complete Step 1 of the replace device wizard.
  2. When prompted to transfer files, click Select Files To Transfer.
  3. Add your local backup:
    • Devices with cloud and local destinations: Click the arrow next to your destination name and select Add a local backup.
Partial screenshot of the Transfer Files screen with the destination menu open
    • Devices with only local destinations: The CrashPlan app detects there are no cloud destinations, click Continue.

  4. From your file browser, select the folder containing your local backup.
The folder is labeled with an 18-digit number, and the GUID of the folder you select must match the device ID of the device you are replacing.
  5. When prompted, click Add Backup to confirm you want to add the backup archive from folder you selected.
Your local backup files are now available for download, and you can continue with Step 2 of the replace device wizard.
