Creating a local backup to an external drive

Objective

This article walks you through the steps required to configure the CrashPlan app to back up files to a local destination, such as an external drive. Backing up to a local destination is recommended as part of a comprehensive backup strategy, especially when backing up large quantities of data.

Prerequisites

  • You must have permission to manage your backup destinations and add local destinations. If your organization prevents changing or adding destinations, contact your administrator.

Note for administrators
If you local destinations are disabled in your CrashPlan environment, contact technical support to enable this setting.

Steps

Follow these instructions if you would like to back up the files to a folder on your device or external drive:

  1. Open the CrashPlan app.
  2. Navigate to Settings > Backup Sets.
  3. Next to Destinations, click Change.
  4. Select Add Local Destination.
  5. From your file browser, select the drive or folder you want to back up to.
  6. From the list of available destinations, check the box next to the local destination you just added.
  7. Click Save.
    The CrashPlan app begins backing up your backup set to the external drive.
