This article describes each field and control in the Legal Hold area of the CrashPlan console. For how legal hold works, see How legal hold works. Procedures are covered in the articles linked from each section below.
- To open matters, select Legal Hold > Matters.
- To open preservation policies, select Legal Hold > Preservation Policies.
A preservation policy must exist before a matter can be created.
All Matters
To create a matter, see Create a legal hold matter and add custodians.

Create Matter

Details
Select a matter from All Matters to open its details.

Closing a matter releases every custodian in it and begins the permanent deletion of the data the matter was preserving. Before closing a matter, see Release custodians and close a matter.
Custodians
Select a matter, then select Custodians.

| l | Release | Releases the custodian from legal hold. Hovering over a released custodian displays a + icon that reactivates them. |
Get Files is unavailable when the signed in administrator holds the Org Legal Admin role and the custodian belongs to another organization. To collect files, see Collect files from a legal hold. To release or reactivate a custodian, see Release custodians and close a matter.
Activity
Select a matter, then select Activity to view the events recorded for it. See View legal hold activity.

Preservation policy settings
Select a policy from All Preservation Policies to open its settings.
Leave Advanced Settings at their defaults for a preservation policy. Changing them alters how the legal hold backup set captures files.

| m | Frequency | How often a changed file produces a new version. |
| n | Version retention | How long each generation of versions is kept, and how long deleted files remain in the archive. |
| o | Edit Frequency and Versions | Changes the frequency and version retention settings. |
| p | Back up open files | Whether files in use at the time of backup are included. |
| q | Edit Advanced Settings | Changes the Back up open files setting. |
Filename exclusions configured under Global Exclusions in the CrashPlan console apply to every preservation policy in addition to the exclusions listed here. See Best practices for legal hold file selections and exclusions.
While a custodian is on legal hold, the frequency and version retention set here take precedence over the settings on that custodian's other backup sets. See How legal hold works.
