Error opening CrashPlan app: 'The CrashPlan service has encountered a problem'

Problem

When opening the CrashPlan app, the user interface displays the error message, "The CrashPlan service has encountered a problem," rather than the login screen or backup details.

Environment

  • CrashPlan app

Cause

The CrashPlan app consists of a graphical user interface (GUI) and a background service. These two components communicate over a local network connection. When the app starts, the GUI and the background service attempt to connect to each other. If they cannot connect, the GUI displays an error message.

Resolution

If you receive this error, perform the following troubleshooting steps in order:

  1. Restart the service: The most common fix is to manually restart the CrashPlan app's background service. Follow the steps in our guide: Restarting the CrashPlan app service.
  2. Check for software conflicts: Verify that another software on the computer is not interfering with the CrashPlan app. If you are running software that is known to cause problems with CrashPlan, configure that software to ignore or exclude the CrashPlan app from its processes.
  3. Uninstall and reinstall: If the steps above do not resolve the issue, uninstall and reinstall the CrashPlan app to ensure the current installation has not been damaged or corrupted.
