Data retention after your CrashPlan subscription ends

When a CrashPlan subscription ends, whether it was canceled or ended after a renewal payment could not be collected, backups stop and the account moves through stages that end with the permanent deletion of its backup data. Each stage is timed from the date the subscription ends.

To control how long CrashPlan keeps file versions and deleted files during an active subscription, change the version retention settings instead.

Before your subscription ends

Restore any files you need, including files backed up to local destinations such as external drives, before your CrashPlan subscription ends. Once the account is permanently deleted, CrashPlan technical support cannot recover it. Files can no longer be restored from the deleted account's local backup archives, even by a new account that uses the same email address.

Until the CrashPlan subscription ends, backup and restore work as usual. The steps worth taking before it ends, including restoring files, are in Cancel your CrashPlan subscription.

Stages after the subscription ends

Plan around the earliest time in each stage. The times are approximate, and an account can be deleted sooner depending on its circumstances.

Stage When CrashPlan console access Backup data Resubscribing
Subscription ended End of the term, or 30 days after a renewal payment first fails Available; backup status emails continue Kept; backups stop and new restores cannot be started Resubscribe from the console
Account deactivated About 45 days after the subscription ends Ended; backup status emails stop Kept, pending deletion Contact CrashPlan technical support as soon as possible; reactivation is not always possible
Account deleted About 60 to 90 days after the subscription ends Ended Permanently deleted, including organizations, users, archives, and cold storage Not possible; a new subscription starts new backups
