Choosing the right CrashPlan restore method

Objective

This article helps users and administrators determine the most appropriate method for restoring files based on their current environment, administrative permissions, data size, and troubleshooting needs.

Procedure

To determine the best restore method, identify which of the following conditions match your current situation:

Option 1: Restoring directly from the CrashPlan app

If you are currently on the local device where you want the files restored, you have the CrashPlan app installed, you need to restore a large amount of data, or you need to restore from a local backup destination.

Use this option: Restoring files in the CrashPlan app

Best for: Standard everyday restores, large restores, restoring from local destinations.

Option 2: Restoring a few files via your web browser

If you are away from your primary device, you have access to a web browser, and you only need to download a small selection of files (subject to your organization's web restore size limit).

Use this option: Restoring files from the CrashPlan console via Zip restore

Best for: Quick, on-the-go file retrieval when you do not have the CrashPlan app installed on the device you are currently using.

Option 3: Remotely pushing files to a target device

If you are an administrator or user with pushrestore permissions, you are working from the web console, and you need to remotely start a restore job to push files to an online target device.

Use this option: Pushing a device restore from the CrashPlan console

Best for: Admins who need to seamlessly restore files directly to a user's device without requiring the user to initiate the process themselves. This method is also an alternative if users are experiencing issues with the in-app restore method.
