Setting up two-factor authentication

Objective

This article describes how to set up two-factor authentication (2FA) when signing in to the CrashPlan console for the first time, or after a reset of your 2FA.

Prerequisites

  • Authentication type: You must use local authentication to set up two-factor authentication directly within CrashPlan. If you authenticate via Single Sign-On (SSO), your 2FA is managed by your identity provider (such as Okta or Microsoft Entra ID) and you will not see these setup prompts in CrashPlan.
  • Authenticator application: If you choose to use an authenticator app, you must have a time-based one-time password (TOTP) application installed on your mobile device or in your web browser. If you do not have an authenticator app installed, see Additional resources for a list of several common, free options.
No additional applications are required for email authentication.

Procedure

Setting up app authentication (Recommended)

  1. Sign in to the CrashPlan console.
  2. When prompted to choose your authentication method, select Authenticator app and click Confirm.
  3. Open your authenticator app and scan the provided QR code, or manually enter the displayed secret key into your app.
  4. In the Enter 6-digit verification code field on the CrashPlan sign-in screen, enter the verification code currently generated by your authenticator app.
  5. Click Sign In.

  5. Click Verify.

If you do not already have a time-based one-time password (TOTP) application installed, you must download one before setting up app authentication.
