Objective
This article describes how to set up two-factor authentication (2FA) when signing in to the CrashPlan console for the first time, or after a reset of your 2FA.
Prerequisites
- Authentication type: You must use local authentication to set up two-factor authentication directly within CrashPlan. If you authenticate via Single Sign-On (SSO), your 2FA is managed by your identity provider (such as Okta or Microsoft Entra ID) and you will not see these setup prompts in CrashPlan.
-
Authenticator application: If you choose to use an authenticator app, you must have a time-based one-time password (TOTP) application installed on your mobile device or in your web browser. If you do not have an authenticator app installed, see Additional resources for a list of several common, free options.
No additional applications are required for email authentication.

- When prompted to choose your authentication method, select Authenticator app and click Confirm.
- Open your authenticator app and scan the provided QR code, or manually enter the displayed secret key into your app.
- In the Enter 6-digit verification code field on the CrashPlan sign-in screen, enter the verification code currently generated by your authenticator app.
