CrashPlan uninstall error, "The command exited with a non zero status"

Problem

You cannot uninstall the CrashPlan app from a Mac using the Uninstall.app, and when using the uninstaller a message appears saying "The command exited with a non-zero status"

Environment

  • Mac operating systems

Resolution

Run the uninstaller to retry removing the application, following these steps:

  1. Run the Uninstall.app to Uninstall the CrashPlan app from the device, using the standard method.
    1. If you see the error "The folder can't be found", download the CrashPlan Mac installer and continue to the next step.
  2. Perform a manual uninstall for Mac to remove the files and folders if the standard uninstaller fails.
    • Terminal.app requires Full disk access to successfully uninstall CrashPlan, and requires your User's admin password when uninstalling the app.
    • If the .plist file is missing or inaccessible, the Terminal will display an error when unloading the service:

      user@example ~ % sudo launchctl unload /Library/LaunchDaemons/com.crashplan.service.plist
      Password:
      Unload failed: 5: Input/output error
Try running `launchctl bootout` as root for richer errors.
      user@example ~ %
  3. Repeat these steps for per-user install locations if the following folders exist on your device:

    • Installed for everyone: /Library/Application Support/CrashPlan/

    • Installed per user: ~/Library/Application Support/CrashPlan/

  4. Verify the files for CrashPlan are uninstalled.
  5. Contact Support for assistance if you still have issues uninstalling the app.

Cause

This error occurs when the Uninstall.app is unable to locate the com.crashplan.service.plist file or encounters an issue loading it.
