Problem
When starting or restarting the CrashPlan service, the following Windows error message displays: "Error 1053: The service did not respond."
Other symptoms include:
- Error message: "Error 1053: The service did not respond to the start or control request in a timely fashion."
- Error message: "Windows could not stop the CrashPlan Service."
- Error message: "Windows could not stop the CrashPlan Service service on [device name]."
- When attempting to restart the service in the services menu, all options (start, stop, restart) are greyed out.
Environment
- Windows operating system
- CrashPlan app installed as a service (default "for everyone" installation type)
Resolution
While this error appears when starting the CrashPlan service, it is produced by the Windows Service Control Manager. We've identified that the following steps typically resolve this issue, but cannot guarantee it will work in all environments. Contact Microsoft support for further assistance.
Basic Resolution
- Restart the computer.
- Open the Windows start menu.
- Type services.msc and press Enter to open the Services menu.
- Verify that the status of the CrashPlan service is Running.
There may be a short delay after a reboot, before the CrashPlan service automatically starts. - If the issue persists after a reboot, uninstall and reinstall the CrashPlan app.
- If the issue is still unresolved, proceed to the Advanced Resolution.
Advanced Resolution
- Open the Windows start menu.
- Type services.msc and press Enter to open the Services menu.
- Right-click on the CrashPlan service and select Properties.
- Click the Log On tab.
- Select This Account and enter the username and password for an account with administrator privileges.
- Click Apply and OK.
- Restart the computer.
- Reopen the Services menu.
- Verify that the status of the CrashPlan service is Running.
There may be a short delay after a reboot, before the CrashPlan service automatically starts.
