Why does CrashPlan say my email address is already in use?

I'm trying to sign up for CrashPlan but it says my email address is already being used. What does this mean?

If you receive the error message 'this email address is already in use' when signing up for a CrashPlan account, this indicates that there is already a CrashPlan user account associated with the email address provided.

Our system only allows an email address to be associated with a single CrashPlan user account in any one of our cloud environments.

To resolve the issue, sign in and change the email address of the account. This will free that email address for use with a new account.
