How to migrate Windows user settings (USMT data) to a new device

Objective

When you get a new Windows device, the CrashPlan app's replace device wizard can transfer your user settings (also called user state or user profile) from a previous Windows device. This includes system settings, application settings, and desktop configurations.

This article explains the specific requirements and steps for transferring Windows user settings (USMT data).

Prerequisites

You can only migrate Windows user settings if your environment meets the following strict requirements:

  • Operating System: You must migrate from Windows to Windows. The new device must have the same or a newer version of Windows than the previous device.
  • Architecture: You can migrate from a 32-bit system to either a 32-bit or 64-bit system. You can only migrate from a 64-bit system to a 64-bit system.
  • USMT Installation: The User State Migration Tool (USMT) must be installed on the device at C:\Program Files\CrashPlan\USMT\.

Procedure

Step 1: Start the wizard and choose your device

  1. Open the CrashPlan app on your new device.
  2. If this is your first time signing in, click Replace Existing. If you have already signed in, select Tools > Replace device from the menu bar at the top of the app window.
  3. Click Start.
  4. Select the Windows device whose settings you want to migrate.
  5. Click Continue.

Step 2: Transfer Windows user settings

Before transferring settings
Windows user settings can be large files and may take up to an hour to download. Disable your Windows sleep settings to prevent the download from being interrupted.

  1. From the Last backed up on menu, select the date and time of the Windows user settings you wish to migrate (typically the most recent).
  2. Click Continue.
  3. Monitor the transfer status icons:
    • Completed (Green checkmark): The transfer was successful.
    • Waiting for destination (Gray tilde): The machine lost connection to the backup archive. Click Retry.
    • Applying Settings Failed (Gray exclamation point): The settings could not be applied. Click Go back and select a different date and time, or click Skip to bypass migrating Windows user settings.

Step 3: Transfer your files to finish migration

Once your Windows user settings have successfully downloaded and applied, you must transfer your standard files to the new device.

  1. Proceed to Step 2 in the Replacing your device guide to select your files, transfer your app settings, and complete the migration process.
  2. Any Windows user settings you transferred will take effect the next time you sign out of Windows and sign back in.
