Can't delete a backup set

Problem

You are unable to delete a backup set in the CrashPlan app. The option to remove the backup set is unavailable.

Environment

  • Multiple backup sets configured in the CrashPlan app
  • Backup set settings are not locked at the organization level

If backup set settings are unavailable

If the options described in this article are unavailable, or if you are unsure whether backup set settings have been locked for your organization, contact your administrator.

Cause

You are attempting to delete the device's default backup set, which cannot be deleted.

Resolution

Because the default backup set cannot be deleted in favor of a set you created, merge the secondary set's file selection into the default set instead. This retains the data you require and allows you to remove the secondary set.

Step 1: Add the secondary set's files to the default backup set

  1. Open the CrashPlan app.
  2. Click Manage Files for the default backup set on the Home screen.
  3. Select the files and locations that are currently in your secondary backup set.
Because the data is already backed up, CrashPlan uses data deduplication to move these files into the default backup set without uploading them again.
  4. Click Save.
  5. Wait for the default backup set to display Backup complete.
This may take some time, even if the CrashPlan app is only deduplicating already backed up files.

Step 2: Remove the secondary backup set

Complete Step 1 first

Removing a backup set permanently deletes its archived files from every destination. If Step 1 is not fully complete, including waiting for Backup complete in step 5, the data in the secondary backup set will be lost and cannot be recovered.

  1. Click the Backup Set Settings button (gear icon) for the secondary backup set on the Home screen.
  2. Select Delete Backup Set at the bottom of the settings page.
  3. Select I understand in the warning dialog.
  4. Click Remove.
