Known software conflicts with the CrashPlan app

Overview

Third-party software such as antivirus programs, Endpoint Detection and Response (EDR) solutions, Virtual Private Networks (VPNs), network proxies, and system optimization tools may inadvertently block network connections, intercept backup traffic, or terminate background processes, ultimately preventing backups from running.

Users experiencing a software conflict may see signs of connection problems, such as the error messages "Cannot connect to the background service" or "Cannot connect to destination."

Note about third-party products
Information about third-party products is provided as a courtesy to help you get the most out of CrashPlan. However, our technical support team cannot provide direct assistance for these products. If you need help with third-party software or hardware, please consult the manufacturer's documentation or contact their support team.

  • CleanMyMac
  • ESET

Best practices

To avoid backup interruptions caused by security software, we recommend the following:

  • Configure exclusions or bypasses: Consult your software manufacturer's documentation to add an exception for the CrashPlan app, allowing both incoming and outgoing communication, or configuring your VPN/proxy to bypass the app's network traffic.

    Application upgrades
Upgrading to a new version may cause third-party software to detect CrashPlan as a new application and block its activity. If this occurs, you must reconfigure your settings to allow CrashPlan to run.

  • Port requirements: The CrashPlan app must be able to open network sockets to function. By default, it reserves ports 4244 and 4287, but a different port may be assigned if these are already in use. See IP addresses and ports used by CrashPlan for further details.
  • Diagnosing unlisted software: If you are using an application not included in the list above, you can determine if it is causing a conflict by temporarily disabling the application and testing the connection.

    Report new conflicts
If you discover a software conflict that isn't listed above, please contact technical support. Your feedback helps us investigate solutions and inform other customers.
