Question
How does the CrashPlan app determine if a user is "present" or "away" from their device in order to adjust CPU and bandwidth usage?
Answer
The CrashPlan app detects your away/present status using different methods depending on your operating system. Across all operating systems, it may take up to 30 seconds for the app to detect and apply a change in status.
The CrashPlan app does not access your camera and does not require any extra permissions to determine if video or media is active.
Windows
The CrashPlan app evaluates the following factors:
- Mouse and keyboard activity (including activity over Remote Desktop / RDP connections).
- Media playing (including streaming video in web browsers and video conference applications).
Media detection is not supported for per-user installations.
Mac
The CrashPlan app evaluates the following factors:
- Mouse and keyboard activity (activity over remote connections is not detected).
- Media playing (including audio, streaming video in web browsers, and video conference applications).
Linux
The CrashPlan app relies solely on mouse and keyboard activity (activity over remote connections is not detected).
Note: Activity detection on Linux requires the following packages to be installed:
- Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL):
libXScrnSaverandlibnsl - Ubuntu:
libgconf-2-4
