Assigning a new computer ID

Objective

This article describes the steps required to assign a new unique computer ID (GUID) to the CrashPlan app.

This process is necessary to differentiate the device's backup archive and history from a previous installation. You should perform this task if:

  • You want to start a new backup under a different user.
  • You have cloned a Virtual Machine (VM) that the CrashPlan app is running on.
  • You recently changed computers using a utility like Migration Assistant or Time Machine.
  • You are instructed to do so by a technical support engineer for troubleshooting.

Note: The CrashPlan app's uninstaller does not reset your computer identity. If you want to completely remove traces of a previous installation to start over, you must use the command below.

Procedure

  1. Sign in to the CrashPlan app.
  2. Open the CrashPlan Commands window using one of the following methods:
    • Double-click the CrashPlan logo.
    • Enter the shortcut for your operating system:
      • Windows or Linux: Ctrl+Shift+C
      • Mac: Option+Command+C
  3. Enter the following command: guid new
  4. Press Enter.
The CrashPlan app will reset and return to the login screen.
