Objective
This article describes the steps required to assign a new unique computer ID (GUID) to the CrashPlan app.
This process is necessary to differentiate the device's backup archive and history from a previous installation. You should perform this task if:
- You want to start a new backup under a different user.
- You have cloned a Virtual Machine (VM) that the CrashPlan app is running on.
- You recently changed computers using a utility like Migration Assistant or Time Machine.
- You are instructed to do so by a technical support engineer for troubleshooting.
Note: The CrashPlan app's uninstaller does not reset your computer identity. If you want to completely remove traces of a previous installation to start over, you must use the command below.
Procedure
- Sign in to the CrashPlan app.
- Open the CrashPlan Commands window using one of the following methods:
- Double-click the CrashPlan logo.
- Enter the shortcut for your operating system:
- Windows or Linux: Ctrl+Shift+C
- Mac: Option+Command+C
- Enter the following command:
guid new - Press Enter.
The CrashPlan app will reset and return to the login screen.
