"Waiting for connection" error in the CrashPlan App on Mac

Problem

When opening the CrashPlan app or checking the tray icon, it shows a "Waiting for connection" error for multiple days and does not back up.

Environment

  • MacOS, versions (15.4, 15.6) arm64.
  • The CrashPlan app is installed, version 11.6.0 and newer.
  • CleanMyMac app is installed.

Resolution

We recommend you stop and restart the CrashPlan service following the steps below for default Mac installations, or refer to our guide for restarting the CrashPlan service.

  1. Open Finder, browse to the Applications > Utilities folder, and open Terminal.app.
  2. Copy the command and paste into Terminal to stop the CrashPlan service, and press Enter
    • sudo launchctl unload /Library/LaunchDaemons/com.crashplan.service.plist
    • When prompted, type your Mac password and press Enter. The password doesn't display as you type it.
  3. Copy the command and paste into Terminal to restart the service, and press Enter.
    • sudo launchctl load /Library/LaunchDaemons/com.crashplan.service.plist
  4. Re-open the CrashPlan app and check if the backup is now connecting.
