Releasing a user from Legal Hold

Objective

This article describes the steps required to release a user from a Legal Hold matter. You should perform this procedure to release a user from a Legal Hold, or if their device is still listed as being under Legal Hold status.

Prerequisites

  • CrashPlan console: Access to the administration console.
  • Roles: Your user account must have the Customer Cloud Admin (CCA) or Cross-Org Legal Admin role.

Procedure

To fully release a user and remove the Legal Hold status from their device, you must release the custodian from the matter and then close the matter itself.

  1. Sign in to the CrashPlan console.
  2. Navigate to Legal Hold > Matters > All Matters.
  3. Select the matter associated with the user.
  4. Select the Custodians tab.
  5. Select the custodian (user) you wish to release.
  6. Click Release.
Note: This ends the legal hold requirement for the user but does not immediately close the matter.
  7. Select the Overview or Details tab.
  8. Click Close.
  9. Confirm the closure to formally end the legal hold.
The device is removed from Legal Hold and data previously on hold becomes subject to standard retention and deletion policies.
