CrashPlan service fails to start, 'Can't find file specified'

Problem

When attempting to restart the CrashPlan service, the service does not start and one of the following error messages is displayed:

  • Error 2: The system cannot find the file specified
  • Windows could not start the CrashPlan Service service located on [device name]
  • Could not start CrashPlan Service

Environment

  • Windows devices running the CrashPlan app.
  • May occur after an unexpected shutdown or crash.

Resolution

Uninstall and reinstall the CrashPlan app.
