Steps

Sign in to the CrashPlan for Microsoft 365 portal

When you sign up, you'll receive a welcome email that contains a unique portal link, your username, and a temporary password. Click the portal link and use the username and password to sign in.

Change your password

As the password you've been given is temporary, you'll be prompted to provide a new, unique password. Along with your existing username, this is what you will use to log in going forward.

Provide consent for CrashPlan to read and write to your Microsoft 365 environment

For CrashPlan for Microsoft 365 to successfully back up your assets, we need certain permissions from Microsoft 365. After entering your credentials and signing in, you'll be prompted to provide these permissions. Click Proceed.

This step requires Microsoft 365 Global Administrator access. If your admin account does not have the necessary access, CrashPlan will be unable to fully grant permissions and backups may not be able to start.

Microsoft 365 consent settings with admin consent buttons

  1. On the Microsoft 365 Consent screen, click Grant Admin Consent on the Consent to Read item. You'll be brought to a Microsoft page to select the administrator account for your tenant, and then prompted with a list of permissions to provide CrashPlan. Click Accept to complete.
  2. Once you're back on the consent screen, click Grant Admin Consent on the Consent to Write item. You'll be brought to a slightly different permissions page where there will be a list of permissions for you to review. Click Accept to complete.

Once both Admin Consent action items have been completed, you'll see a green Success pop-up appear in the bottom-right corner of your screen.

Configure assets

An asset is a Microsoft Exchange mailbox, OneDrive for Business user, or SharePoint site you wish to back up using CrashPlan. The wizard will first bring you to configure Microsoft Exchange mailbox assets, and you can chose whether you want to configure the assets automatically or manually.

Configure Microsoft Exchange mailboxes automatically

  1. Toggle Automatically configure all discovered Microsoft Exchange Mailboxes
  2. Select a policy for the discovered mailboxes to use. By default, there is an EX_Catch_All default policy created that will be selected which we suggest you use. If desired, you can go to the Policies section later and configure your own custom policies to use.
  3. Click Save to complete.

Configure Microsoft Exchange mailboxes manually

Microsoft Exchange mailbox configuration interface

  1. Click Discover Mailboxes Now to populate the asset list on the left.
  2. Check the box next to the user(s) you wish to configure for backup. You can also use the search box to narrow down the list or find a specific asset.
  3. Click the green right-pointing arrow to add them to the configuration list.
To remove items from the configuration list, check their boxes and click the left-pointing red arrow.
  4. In the configuration list, select a policy for each item. Like the automatic setup, you can use the default EX_Catch_All policy before creating your own later in the Policies menu.
  5. Click Save to complete.

Configure OneDrive and SharePoint

You can view and configure OneDrive and SharePoint assets using the same automatic and manual steps above (as well as viewing Microsoft Exchange if you want to make changes later) by using the Manage Assets section on the home page.

  • Microsoft Exchange: Manage Assets > Microsoft Exchange > Configure Mailboxes
  • OneDrive for Business: Manage Assets > Microsoft Exchange > Configure OneDrive
  • SharePoint Online: Manage Assets > Microsoft Exchange > Configure Sites

Next steps

Once your assets are configured, your backups will begin automatically. If you'd like to learn more about using the product, check out our CrashPlan for Microsoft 365 reference guide. If you have questions or run into issues, reach out to our technical support team.
