Overview
If you backed up a previous device to a local destination, such as an external drive, you can transfer files from that backup to a new device using the replace device wizard. This is particularly useful for larger backups, since files transfer much faster from a local destination than they do from a cloud destination.
This tutorial describes how to connect a local backup to the CrashPlan app using the replace device wizard.
Considerations
- You can only connect a local backup if it corresponds to the device that you are replacing. The CrashPlan app will compare the device ID of the device you are replacing with the device ID associated with your local backup. If these IDs do not match, you cannot connect the backup.
- The replace device wizard supports connecting a local backup into two scenarios:
- The device you are replacing backed up to both local and cloud destinations.
- The device you are replacing backed up exclusively to a local destination.
Connect a local backup to the replace device wizard
For a device with both cloud and local backups
- Complete Step 1 of the replace device wizard.
- When prompted to transfer files, click Select Files To Transfer.
- Click the arrow next to your destination name.
- Select Add a local backup.
- From your file browser, select the folder containing your local backup.
The GUID of the folder you select must match the the device ID of the device you are replacing. Look for the folder that matches your previous device’s ID (for example, 948212309528060501).Locating the source device's ID
Your backup archive is stored in a folder labeled with an 18-digit number. This number corresponds to the device ID assigned to the device you backed up. If you have multiple backup archives stored on your external drive, and you are unsure which one corresponds to the backup you want to attach, see locating your device ID below.
- When prompted, click Add Backup to confirm you want to add the backup archive from the drive or folder you selected.
Your local backup files are now available for download. - Continue with Step 2 of the replace device wizard.
For a device with only local backups
- Complete Step 1 of the replace device wizard.
- When prompted to transfer files, click Select Files To Transfer.
The CrashPlan app detects there are no cloud destinations. - Click Continue to browse to your local backup.
- From your file browser, select the folder containing your local backup.
