If the CrashPlan app displays “System error: if problem persists re-install CrashPlan,” and re-installing does not resolve the issue, there may be a conflict between CrashPlan and another application on your computer. Follow the steps in this article to troubleshoot the issue.

Under the hood

The CrashPlan app relies on a specific Java library to function. We install this library with the CrashPlan app. This way, it does not interact with other applications on your computer. But, if another application installs a Java library at the system level, it creates a conflict and causes this error.

System error: If problem persists re-install CrashPlan

Recommended solution

In order to resolve this problem, you must remove the additional library.

Other Software
Removing the Java library in the steps below may cause the application that installed it to fail. As described in the steps below, we recommend temporarily moving the library to another location. If you find that another application on your computer is adversely effected, you may not be able to use CrashPlan and that application on the same computer.
  1. Create a new folder on your Desktop, or another easily-accessible location, and name it Temp.
  2. Go to the following location in your computer's file system:
    • Windows Vista, 7, 8, 10, Server 2008, and Server 2012: %SystemRoot%\Sun\Java\lib\ext
    • OS X: /Library/Java/Extensions
    • Linux: /usr/java/packages/lib/ext
    • Solaris: /usr/jdk/packages/lib/ext
  3. Move any files within that folder to the Temp folder you created.
  4. Stop and start the CrashPlan service.
  5. Open the CrashPlan app.
The CrashPlan app opens and you are able to sign in.
