Destination Unavailable

When a destination is unavailable, the CrashPlan app displays one of the causes listed below:

  • Backup location is not accessible
  • Not scheduled to run
  • Backup files are being maintained
  • Not authorized

Review the troubleshooting information below for the message you received.

Backup location is not accessible

The CrashPlan app reports “Destination unavailable. Backup location is not accessible” when it can’t locate or access a particular destination. The reason varies based on the destination type. See the troubleshooting information below for the destination you are unable to reach.

CrashPlan Central is not accessible

CrashPlan for Home only

If CrashPlan Central is not accessible, you can rule out a connection issue on your network by following our troubleshooting networking issues guide.

Computer destination is not accessible

Ensure that both computers are powered on and connected to the Internet. If the CrashPlan app still reports destination unavailable, follow our instructions for troubleshooting connections between computers.

External drive is not accessible

If an external drive destination is unavailable, the drive name or letter may have changed. See the common cause and solution below for your operating system.


By default, Windows does not assign a static drive letter to external drives. For instance, if a drive named D:\ is ejected from the computer and then reconnected, it may be assigned a different drive letter. If the drive letter changes, CrashPlan won't recognize the drive because it's still looking for the old drive letter.

To determine if the drive letter changed:

  1. Open the CrashPlan app
  2. Click Destinations
  3. Select Folders
    Under the available folders, note the letter CrashPlan expects for your external drive
  4. Open Windows Explorer
  5. Click Computers in the left panel
  6. Compare the letter currently assigned to your drive with the letter CrashPlan has associated with the drive.

If the letters are different, assign the drive a static drive letter using the original drive letter to correct the issue.


On a Mac, this issue is typically caused by a drive that didn't cleanly unmount (e.g., due to a power outage, disconnected without ejecting, etc.). When this happens, the drive can leave behind a "ghost" folder in /Volumes, even though the drive is no longer mounted. When the drive re-mounts, your Mac sees that the folder name for the drive is taken, so it appends a “1” to the drive name. However, CrashPlan is looking for the folder with the original name, which is no longer valid.

Not scheduled to run

The "Destination unavailable - not scheduled to run" message displays when the CrashPlan app on the source or destination computer is set to run between certain hours and it is outside that time period.

If CrashPlan is restricted to running at specified times on both the source and destination computer, there must be an overlapping window during which both computers are allowed to run CrashPlan in order to back up successfully.

Source computer

To adjust the times that CrashPlan is able to run on the source computer (i.e., the computer being backed up):

  1. Open the CrashPlan app
  2. Go to Settings > Backup
  3. Adjust the setting for Backup will run

Destination computer

To adjust the times that CrashPlan is able to accept inbound backups on the destination computer (i.e., the computer storing the backup archive):

  1. Open the CrashPlan app
  2. Go to Settings > General
  3. From Inbound backup from other computers, click Configure
  4. Adjust the setting for Allow backup and restores to run

Backup files are being maintained

If you see the message, "Destination Unavailable - Backup Files Are Being Maintained," the destination is currently performing archive maintenance. Archive maintenance is a normal part of CrashPlan's operation. The "Destination Unavailable" message will disappear once the maintenance process completes.

Not authorized

The "Not Authorized" message appears when a destination cannot successfully communicate with the CrashPlan app.

To reauthorize with your destination:

  1. Open the CrashPlan app.
  2. Double-click the CrashPlan logo in the upper-right corner.
    The command-line interface appears.
  3. Enter this command: deauthorize
    You are signed out of the CrashPlan app.
  4. Sign in again to the CrashPlan app.
