Enabling Windows EFS Support

To back up and restore EFS files, CrashPlan must run “as user” with the necessary permissions. This article describes options for running the CrashPlan app “as user.”

CrashPlan app version 4.3 and later

In the CrashPlan app versions 4.3 and later, backing up and restoring EFS files is fully supported when installed per user.

CrashPlan app version 4.2 and earlier

Unsupported Process

Before you begin

Run as user test

  1. Open the Task Manager (right-click the taskbar and select Start Task Manager).
  2. Select Processes.
  3. Click the Description column heading to sort the processes alphabetically.
  4. Look for the CrashPlan process. The User Name column should list your username.
  5. If the User Name is listed as SYSTEM, Windows EFS support will not be enabled.


  • The steps outlined for versions 4.2 and earlier of the CrashPlan app are not officially supported.
  • This solution may not be practical if CrashPlan is running on a file server that contains files owned by other users.
  • Following the steps below stops the system tray. Be sure to turn it back on and verify that the system tray is running once you're finished with these steps.
  • In Windows 7 and Windows Vista, CrashPlan uses the system tray to detect whether or not the user is present or away from the computer. Because CrashPlan works harder when you are away than when you are at your computer, it is important that the system tray is running so that CrashPlan knows when it can worker harder and when it should throttle back.


  1. From the Windows Start Menu, right-click Computer and select Manage.
    The Computer Management windows opens.
    (From the Start menu, you can also choose Run and type Services.MSC)
  2. Select Services and Applications > Services.
  3. Double-click CrashPlan Backup Service (or right-click and select Properties).
  4. Click the Log On tab.
  5. Select "This account:"
    • In the Username field, enter the user name.
      For example, .\username
    • In the Password field, enter the password.
  6. Click OK.
  7. In the message box stating permissions have been granted to this user, click OK.
  8. In the next message box stating changes will not take effect until the service is stopped and restarted, click OK.
  9. Make sure CrashPlan Backup Service is still selected and click Stop the service.
  10. Click Start the service.
  11. From the Windows Start Menu, select All Programs > CrashPlan > CrashPlan Tray to restart the system tray.
