CrashPlan For Home And Antivirus Software

Overview

Most people use antivirus software on computers backed up with CrashPlan without any special configuration. However, if you would like to optimize the efficiency of your backup and your antivirus scans, there are several exemptions you can make in both CrashPlan and your antivirus software.

Excluding CrashPlan from your antivirus scan

CrashPlan can work alongside most antivirus programs without any problems. However, certain software configurations can cause CrashPlan and an antivirus program to compete for access to files or system resources. As a result, we recommend configuring your antivirus program to exempt CrashPlan's data folders and system processes. Ignoring CrashPlan's data folders and runtime processes does not risk your system security. CrashPlan backs up your existing files, but only creates two types of files.

Backup archives

Backup archives only contain compressed and encrypted versions of data that is already stored elsewhere. Furthermore, malicious files cannot activate or spread while in a compressed and encrypted form. To detect malicious files, scan the source, not the backup archive.

The default location of backup archives varies by operating system:

  • Windows Vista, 7, 8, 10, Server 2008, and Server 2012: C:\ProgramData\CrashPlan\backupArchives

  • Windows XP: C:\Program Files\CrashPlan\backupArchives

  • Linux: /usr/local/var/crashplan/

Cache files

CrashPlan's cache files are benign records of CrashPlan's operations and activity, and therefore they can be ignored by antivirus scans.

The default location of the CrashPlan cache varies by operating system:

  • Windows Vista, 7, 8, 10, Server 2008, and Server 2012: C:\ProgramData\CrashPlan\cache

  • Windows XP: C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\CrashPlan\cache

Excluding your antivirus from CrashPlan's file selection

To optimize backup performance and avoid unnecessary use of your system resources and bandwidth, we recommend changing your CrashPlan file selection to exclude antivirus definitions and caches:

  • Antivirus applications often update and download new definition files, which define how the application detects viruses on your system.
  • There is no need to restore definition files, as they are downloaded when installing the antivirus application
  • As antivirus programs scan your computer, they create cache files and the need to restore the cache files is very unlikely
  • Program and application files should not be backed up with CrashPlan

Antivirus software conflicts

Antivirus software is designed to protect your system against unknown applications and unauthorized Internet activity. Consequently, you may need to add CrashPlan as an approved application in your antivirus or security software in order for the CrashPlan app to function properly. The following antivirus and security applications have been known to prevent CrashPlan connections.

CrashPlan Version Updates
When the CrashPlan app is upgraded to a later version, antivirus and security software may consider it a "new" application and block its activity. If this occurs, re-add CrashPlan as an approved application.
