Backup

Use the options on the Backup tab to view and modify backup settings, including backup destinations, files to back up, backup sources and status.

If you are using the free version of CrashPlan or have not enabled backup sets, the Backup tab looks like this.

Item Description
aBackup DestinationsThe computers and people who have agreed to let you back up to their computers. They may or may not be active. The green icon next to a destination means that you are connected to this destination. A gray icon means your are not connected to this destination. Click a backup destination to display its settings.
bCrashPlan CentralDisplays details about backing up to CrashPlan Central.
cSign upAfter your 30-day free CrashPlan subscription expires, this link displays Store page on CrashPlan website where you can sign up for a CrashPlan+ subscription that will allow you to continue backing up to CrashPlan Central and to use other CrashPlan+ features, such as backup sets. Learn what happens if you decide not to purchase a CrashPlan+ subscription
If you haven't yet started backing up to CrashPlan Central, you see this Start Backup button.
dFriends computerFriends computer to which you are backing up. Click to display details about this destination.
First Use: If you haven't yet specified any backup destinations, the Backup Destinations area displays the Invite Friend link for inviting new friends to CrashPlan.
eResume / Start backup / Pause backupClick to pause a backup in progress. Click to resume a backup you have paused or to start a backup earlier than is scheduled.
fBackup Destination StatusProgress bar shows current backup activity for each of the destination you are currently backing up to.
Info (i) icon displays details about number of files to be backed up and number which have been backed up.
gFiles to Back UpSpecifies the file/folders to be included in your backup. You can select as many files or folders as you want.
hFolder / Files Folder being backed up.
iFiles / Backup SizeNumber of files you are backing up.
jChange... Display file tree where you can change (add or delete) files for backup.
kScan CrashPlan reviews your selected files/folders looking for changes since the last backup. Anything that is new, changed or different is flagged and included in the next scheduled backup.
lBackup SourcesComputers that are backing up to you.
mSources shortcut menu Display other sources options, including:
Invite a friend Display Destination > Friends page where you can learn more inviting a friend to use CrashPlan.
Share your backup codeBackup code that you can provide to people already using CrashPlan so that they can back up to you.
Attach an archive…Select backup archive folder to which you can backup.
Disable inbound backupPrevent your CrashPlan friends from backing up to you. Disabling inbound backup removes the Backup Sources section of the page. To accept inbound backups you need to enable inbound backups.

Change... (File Selection)

File selection

Item Description
a Indicates some items in this location, but not all, are selected for back up.
b Indicates that no items in this location are selected for back up.
c Indicates that all items in this location are selected for back up.
d Show hidden files Indicates whether or not hidden files are displayed in the Change File Selection window.
Checked - Hidden files appear in the window.
Unchecked - Hidden files do not appear in the window.
e Cancel Ignore changes in this window.
f Save Save changes.

Step-by-Step Instructions

Click a destination (in the Backup Destinations area of the Backup tab) to display details about this backup destination.

Destinations > Cloud > Central

Item Description
aCloud storageList of cloud storage locations you're backing up to.
bBackup set nameList of backup sets backing up to the selected cloud destination.

dInformationClick to display additional backup stats.
eSpace quotaAmount of space allocated for your backup archive at this cloud destination. Automatic means that there are no space restrictions.
fSpace usedAmount of space your backup archive consumes at the cloud destination. It is normal for this number to be different than the size of your selected files.
gInternet addressThe public IP address of the destination cloud storage.
hConnection statusHow long this computer has been connected to the cloud storage. If the computer is not currently connected, the Retry button appears.
iCompactReclaims space in the back up archive by immediately applying file selection or retention policy changes (such as how many versions to keep and how long to keep deleted files). Click the Compact button when you want to reclaim space sooner than specified with the “Maintain archives…” setting.
jRemove Backup DestinationDiscontinue using the selected cloud storage as a backup destination.
WARNING: After you click this button and click Save, the backup archives on this destination will be removed.
iUndo ChangesClick to set the features back to previous settings (same effect as cancel).
jSaveClick to apply changes.

Specific Backup Destinations – Friend Backup Destination (First Use)

Step-by-Step Instructions

Item Description
aFriends listList of friends you have invited. When the friend accepts the invitation, the friend's name appears in the list. A green dot next to a friend's name mean the friend is running CrashPlan and connected to the Internet.
bInvite linkOpens your CrashPlan account online (on the CrashPlan website) where you can invite contacts to be your CrashPlan friends.
cStart BackupBegins backing up to the selected friend. This becomes enabled only after you select a friend from the Friends list.
dBackup CodeBackup code for this computer. Supply this code to your friends who are already CrashPlan users, so they can begin backing up to you right away. No need to send to them another invitation message to download and install CrashPlan. They just enter this code on their own Destinations > Friends page.
eFriend's backup codeEnter the backup code for a friend's computer so you can start backing up to your friend.
fStart backupBegins backing up to the friend whose backup code you've entered.
gUndo ChangesClick to set the features back to previous settings (same effect as cancel).
hSaveClick to apply changes.

Destination > Friends (Friend Details)

After a friend accepts your invitation and is connected, click the friend's name to view this destination's backup details.

bFriend nameName of the friend.
cNameName of the backup destination. You can change the name of the destination to something that is easier for you to recognize.

eLast backupTime since last backup to this destination.
fSpace quotaAmount of space allocated for your backup archive on this friend's computer. Automatic means that there are no space restrictions.

aComputers listList of computers running CrashPlan under this account. You can back up to these computers.
bSelected computerClick a computer to view destination details.
cNameName of the backup destination. You can change the name of the destination to something that is easier for you to recognize.
dDeactivate ComputerCompletely removes this computer from your account. Backup data is deleted.
eLast backupTime since last backup to this destination.
fSpace quotaAmount of space allocated for your backup archive on this computer. Automatic means that there are no space restrictions.
gSpace usedAmount of space your archive has used on this computer.
hCompactReclaims space in the back up archive by immediately applying file selection or retention policy changes (such as how many versions to keep and how long to keep deleted files). Click the Compact button when you want to reclaim space sooner than specified with the “Maintain archives…” setting.
